The Website
For years the Christian community has struggled with an ever-increasing reputation of being angry self-righteous bigots whose call from God is to convert the world to their brand of denominational religion. Recognizing this reputation as a possible barrier to their witness many Christians disassociated themselves from the heir church’s denominational title and began referring to themselves simply as “Christian” or “just Christian.”
However, the reputation grew, and soon it was not enough to just disassociate oneself from their Christian denomination; now it became necessary to disassociate oneself from all of Christianity tied to this reputation. But this created a problem:How does a Christian disassociate himself from Christianity and its growing insidious reputation without disassociating himself from Jesus Christ? The answer was simple; go deeper and instead of call yourself a “Christian” you now call yourself a “Christ Follower”. This blog is a reflection of that mentality, and then some.
If you look closely at the evolution of the church since the mid 20th Century one thing you might notice is that faith is becoming more and more individualized. Organized religion rooted in a denominational identity is slowly giving way spiritualism rooted in self. While the true Christian church as reflected in the Bible in no way supports this change, it is to the detriment of all Christian leaders to overlook it. This blog, “Don’t Call Me Christian”, and the book by the same title which the author is writing, is a discussion about faith and human spirituality in light of this change.
